Rolex 42-nd race in the Mediterranean continues in full force and severe weather. During the night, the list of finishers increased from seven to 18 and so on until 09:00 in the morning. Currently, their total number is 31. About 40 crews are moving in the section from Lampedusa to Malta. The weather is expected to worsen further over the next 12 hours. The winds will increase significantly from the northeast, hitting the northern coast of Malta and the seas to Lampedusa. The leader of the club has already been replaced. The British yacht Sunrise, winner of the Rolex Fastnet race for 2021, is already leading the standings.
After Rambler completed its sixth round in Sicily on Monday morning, it was 14 hours before the Volvo 70 I Love Poland, led by Grzegorz Baranowski and winner of the 2020 single-hull liner award, reached the final. The Polish boat is accepted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club Sailing School. The crew generously spent time with the student sailors, some as young as six, making them sail on their ocean maxis and then taking part in some boat races in the port of Marsamxet. Lithuanian contestant Ambersail 2 and Slovenian yacht Way of Life (formerly Morning Glory, overall winner of the 2006 race) were next on the final.
The excitement really started with the arrival of Daguet 3 – Corum, which at one point seemed a contender to take down Comanchi. Eventually, the weather stopped their attempts. At 05:20 he took the lead in IRC Class 2 over Teasing Machine (FRA), which was second.
Artie III finished safely in his native Malta yesterday morning, just 11 minutes from first place in the IRC Class Three, after a time correction, is the best result of Artie III so far. This is somehow less than the two overall victories secured by the Satariano / Ripard combo in 2011 and 2014, but it was still a year to remember. “We prepared the boat very well this year,” said Satariano. “The race was what we hoped for, which pushed us to the limit all the time. The crew was exceptional, we kept the boat intact and we really enjoyed it. ”
